We run this tour as a standalone tour, or an optional add on, for any of our other tours.
It is a fabulous opportunity to see some of the diverse bird species, drawn to the fishing grounds on the Tonle Sap Lake during the dry season.
The best time to visit is during the period; December through March, when the bird life is at its best.

Detailed itinerary.

Spot Billed Pelicans

Day 1
Depart at 1 pm; you will be collected from Hotel; please be ready 10 minutes before this time. We drive to the boat port at Mea Chreay where we board the boat to take us across the northern part of the Tonle Sap Lake to Prek Toal. This takes around 1-2 hours. We check in to our lodgings and take a short cruise up the Sangkar River to observe village, bird life and sunset on the river.
The village of Prek Toal has both houseboats and land dwellings and is a very enjoyable place to spend an evening and night. Lodgings are  in the Environment Center in simple but clean rooms with fans and shared WCs and showers.
There is also an option to stay at a more basic floating house for an authentic floating village experience .

Day 2
We take a Pre Dawn boat ride to take us into the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary. This is one of the wonders of SE Asia. The abundance of fish attract thousands of water birds on the freshwater lake and mangrove forests.(See bird list below) The most common species to be seen are Spot Billed Pelicans, Open Billed storks, Chinese Pond Herons, terns,    and Egrets. Oriental Darters are seen in such numbers it hard to believe they are rare and endangered. We have regular sightings of Painted Storks, Grey headed Fish Eagles and Brahminy Kites. We do sometimes see rare Adjutant Storks and Black Headed Ibis from a tree hide which is a fantastic place to watch the tens of thousands of nesting birds. We return to Prek Toal village for an early lunch in a floating house and cross the north of the lake to return Siem Reap around 1-2pm.
